How does UC’s decision to drop SAT/ACT scores affect you?

For current 10th grade students and older, even though the SAT is optional for UC and some other schools, there is still an advantage if you have a strong SAT score. Universities are going to use the no-SAT students to increase diversity for students with traditionally weak SAT scores. Students will still have a large advantage if they have a strong SAT score because it will help schools with their rankings.

For current 9th and 8th grade students, the SAT will not be used for admissions at UCs. However, SAT scores will be used for scholarships . For private schools, it is likely that SAT scores will still be used for admissions (although some will be optional) so the logic is the same as for older students above.

For 7th grade and younger, it is not clear what is required yet. But what is known is that GPA and the ability to tell your personal story in admissions essays will be critical.
